DTMF4 DTMF Tones

Division 6 DTMF relay boards switch relays on and off in response to DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) tones just like the ones your telephone produces when you push the buttons. There are several ways to generate these tones to command the board.

The Easy Way

Here is a DTMF command pack that contains pre-assembled commands for your DTMF board. The file name for each .WAV file tells you what it does, so all you need to do is play them with a media player or drag them right into your editing software.

The Advanced Way

You can either download this DTMF tone pack, use audio-editing software such as Audacity, or use a smart phone app to build your own DTMF commands.

Modes 1-3

In modes 1-3 you need to send the board 2 tones, the first being the channel you want to select, and the second being whether you want to turn the channel (or channels if you select them all) on or off. Here is a list of the tones and what they do in modes 1-3:

DTMF Commands: Modes 1-3
1 Select Channel 1
2 Select Channel 2
3 Select Channel 3
4 Select Channel 4
5 Select Channel 5
6 Select Channel 6
7 Select Channel 7
8 Select Channel 8
9 Select Channel 9
0 Select Channel 10
A Select Channel 11
B Select Channel 12
C (n/a)
D Select All Channels
* Turn Selected Channel(s) On
# Turn Selected Channel(s) Off

For example, if you wanted to turn channel 1 on, you would send a 1 followed by a * (star). To turn the channel off again you would send a 1 followed by a # (pound).

Here is a complete list of mode 1-3 commands:

Mode 1 (Channels 1-4)
Relay ON Command OFF Command
1 1 * 1 #
2 2 * 2 #
3 3 * 3 #
4 4 * 4 #
All D * D #
Mode 2 (Channels 5-8)
Relay ON Command OFF Command
1 5 * 5 #
2 6 * 6 #
3 7 * 7 #
4 8 * 8 #
All D * D #
Mode 3 (Channels 9-12)

2 0 * 0 #
3 A * A #
4 B * B #
All D * D #

Tone Timing

The minimum length of the tones and spaces that the board will respond to reliably is 15 milliseconds (.015 seconds).

DTMF4 Tone Spacing

This assumes clean tones and a perfect signal. If your signal has noise in it or the board drops some commands you might want to use longer tones and spaces.
